The Bowen Technique is named after the work of Tom Bowen who during the 1960's opened a clinic and developed the therapy in Australia. It is a drug free, non invasive, gentle hands-on therapy. The Bowen Technique is not a massage, chiropractic or osteopathic treatment and does not use force. Some people experience a deep and long lasting relief after two or three sessions.
How does it work?
During a session the therapist will use a sequence of gentle moves over muscle and soft tiss
ue, interspersed with periods of rest which are relaxing and help the body's resources to bring it back to homoeostasis (physiological equlibrium) and give a sense of well being. This means even after the session has finished this process may continue.
Three sessions are often enough, although for some people further consultations may be required.
What does a consultation involve?
A session takes around 50 minutes. Initially there is a discusion between the therapist and the client about how the client is feeling. Usually the individual will lie or sit in a comfortable postion and most of the work will be done through light clothing. The therapist lightly rolls over precise points on muscles and soft tissue in sequence, with periods of rest in between. There is no manipulation and the client should feel relaxed through out.
While some people feel a change immediately it is recommended to have three sessions at weekly intervals.
Having Bowen at regular intervals may also act as a preventative measure by managing stress and help to maintain a well balanced body.
